Along with my girlfriend Lyndsey, I spent two weeks at Green Gecko in August 2006. We had heard about the project from two people we met while traveling in Vietnam , and decided to go and spend some time there while in Cambodia . I will be honest by saying I wasn't sure if it was 'my sort of thing' before going, but I quickly realized how wrong I was.
Right from the start the Kids made us feel right at home and every minute we spent there was a pleasure even if it was a very tiring pleasure at times!!
Their energy and enthusiasm is inspiring and every day that I spent there was always different, but always lots of fun. Lots of my time was spent playing football or basketball or any sort of game really, but for any guys reading this don't just think its all boys stuff I also know two different skipping games and a Hand clapping game, I can't wait to show the lads back in the pub!!
Helping with the English class was a great thing to do, but coming from Northern England I first had to remember how to speak English properly. Tania got lots of amusement out of mine and Lyndseys accent. Its probably a good thing we only helped for two weeks otherwise all the gecko kids would be speaking English with a Northern English accent!
Although its hard to say that I had favorites, but Boram my football partner, Gna for making the Word 'ONE' mean everything and just being a Star, And Mo (Tida) just for being Mo with an attitude and personality all of her own.
Seeing the Kids out on the streets at night really brought home what there life was really like, and it made me appreciate more the good things that they get from Green Gecko. I have been traveling through various countries for the past 8 months, but the two weeks a Green Gecko is right up there as the best things that I have done, and is probably the most rewarding thing I have ever done.
The kids will always have a place in our Hearts and both Lyndsey and I can't wait to come back, which we will definitely be doing and hopefully sooner rather than later.
