At Green Gecko, we recognise that our Gecko mums play a significant role in the family unit. Many of our mums are single parents, and the majority do not have access to support via extended family, which is traditionally is the main source of social support in Cambodia. Most of our mums are illiterate, some are victims of landmines and almost all are victims of domestic abuse.
Our outreach work focuses heavily on empowering our Gecko mums to make positive choices. Education and workshops inform our mums about child and maternal health, pregnancy and family planning, and childhood and tropical illnesses, helping them to better look after themselves and their children.
Green Gecko currently operates a women’s shelter at out outreach centre for mothers in need, either from abuse, physical or mental illness.
By employing a female Khmer nurse in addition to our existing female Khmer social worker, we hope to provide a one-stop shop where our families can seek culturally appropriate assistance and medical attention. Both the nurse and the social worker will make referrals to other organisations where appropriate or more for serious ailments, ensuring families are supported as they access other services.
The budget for this program is $2300 AUD per month (10 sponsors @ $230.00). The full proposal with budget breakdown is available at your request.
